Raphael Rubin – French/Israeli Father. Talks outside the home of Welfare Minister Haim Katz. He is a protestor against Child Contact Centres. There are 64 across Israel, with between 25-35% of children from broken homes being forced to visit their fathers (mainly) there. Raphael was denied the right to see his daughters after playing with them in the contact centre in swimming clothes – pretending to be at the beach, after the mother had rejected his plans to take them out for the day. Whilst washing his daughter’s hands, it was deemed inappropriate and from then he couldn’t visit them. Raphael talks with social activist Moti Leybel regarding his desire for reforms in Israel. He still recommends people come to Israel.
(One year after filming this video, Raphael has given up playing the violin, and faced more pressure from social workers. He did win the right to be with his children in shared custody, but was told to stop activism to maintain this. He has endured arrests, enforced psychiatric assessments, lost access to his children, but continues to fight. His musician friend sadly took his own life a few months after the music activism ceased).
